Minecraft Birthday Cake

Four layers of a vanilla cake frosted with vanilla buttercream with the bottom half-covered with a mixture of crushed oreo cookies and graham crackers and green-tinted vanilla buttercream frosting piped on the top to look like grass!

I have been seeing Minecraft “stuff” since before Hunter was born.

It wasn’t until the beginning of last year, I started to hear about a world where there are Creepers, Villagers, Enderman, of course, Steve, Alex and lots of blocks involved!

So, it was no surprise that for Hunter’s seventh birthday, he wanted a Minecraft birthday cake.

Around birthday time we hop on Pinterest and look for creations he might like. I found one similar to this and went to work.

THe cake

what you need

  • 4 9 X 9 cake pans
  • parchment paper
  • 2 cake mixes
  • cooking spray
  • double batch vanilla buttercream frosting
  • green food coloring
  • Wilton grass tip 233
  • package Oreos
  • 1 sleeve graham cracker

directions

my recipe for the jazzed up box version here. It becomes a bakery-style dense moist cake that is so yummy!

  1. Spray each 9 X 9 pan with cooking spray and then line with parchment paper.
  2. Mix and bake two cake mixes for a total of four 9 X 9 cakes. (I bought 4 dollar tree cake pans specifically for this) bake one cake (two pans) at a time.
  3. While the cake is baking make the buttercream frosting. Add green food coloring to the frosting until it is the desired color of green.
  4. In a Ziploc bag crush 1 package of Oreos and 1 sleeve of graham crackers to make the dirt for the block.
  5. Take the cooled cake squares and layer them putting as much frosting in the center as you would like at least 1/2 cup
  6. Frost the cake with a crumb coat (a thin layer of frosting to coat the entire cake.)
  7. Put it in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
  8. The frosting should be firm to the touch. Then add another layer of frosting on the bottom and begin pressing the cookie crumb mixture around the cake covering the entire bottom half of the cake.
  9. in a frosting bag, using the Wilton tip, make the grass on top.
  10. Add your candles and any other topper.
  11. Sing Happy Birthday, and blow out the candles and CUT THE CAKE AND EAT IT!

Crusting Vanilla -Almond Buttercream

Ingredients
  

  • 2 pounds powdered confectioners sugar
  • 1/2 c butter
  • 1/2 c shortening
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp almond extract
  • pinch salt
  • 3/4-1 c whipping cream

Instructions
 

  • Cream butter and shortening for 2-4 minutes until it is a light yellow color
    Add vanilla and almond extract
    Add powder sugar
    Slowly add in the whipping cream
    Mix for 3-4 minutes
    Variation:
    You can use all butter for this recipe by replacing the shortening. Also, you can replace the whipping cream with whole milk, or 2% milk.
